With over 155,000 students, Lyon stands out as France's second largest university hub. Numerous courses are available and it is home to several renown institutions such as INSA, Centrale and EM Lyon.
In addition to the courses on offer, Lyon is fast becoming a firm favourite among students for numerous reasons, starting with its diverse student life as well as the cultural offerings available. Its numerous infrastructures, such as La Sucrière, the Halle Tony Garnier or Lyon Opera all make up part of the attraction. A noteworthy Student Culture Pass scheme provides access to 4 event spaces and cinemas as well as reductions on the Sound Nights Festival. With a location at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône, here lifestyle is a matter of going with the flow.

Located to the east of the Rhône, Lyon’s 7th district is its most expansive. Over time it has morphed into a dynamic and varied sector with a diversity of neighbourhoods, it is now popular among students due to the convenience and quality of life it offers. As it is very well connected, particularly by metro line B and tram line T2, this means the higher education institution hubs and Lyon's places of interest are within easy reach.
To the south of Guillotière and Saxe-Gambetta, known for their cafe culture, restaurants, bars and alternative scene, Gerland and Garibaldi stand out as calmer more residential neighbourhoods.

Located to the west of the Saône, Lyon’s 9th district offers a variety of characteristics with its residential areas, the new industrial zone and more lively neighbourhoods such as Vaise and Valmy. The presence of several specialist institutions and the city centre’s proximity have made it particularly suitable for students. Leisure activities are very much a feature: multiple sports centres (pitches, Olympic-sized swimming pools...) and cultural offerings (cinemas, theatres, media library) enabling students to access education and entertainment all in one place.
The landscaped banks of the Saône also provide space for relaxation and an area favoured by locals for taking a walk. Served by several transport links (metro, bus, Velo’v), the 9th district is only a few minutes from the rest of the city.

Considered to be Lyon’s 10th district, Villeurbanne, and most specifically its western area, enjoys its proximity to its larger neighbour: the centre of Lyon and all the advantages of a big city are within easy reach. The Charpennes – Gratte-Ciel sector, which centres on the Cours Émile Zola, brings together lively locations overflowing with shops and infrastructure networks.
Ideally positioned next to Lyon, it also allows you to make the most of the rich cultural offerings of Villeurbanne (Le Transbordeur concert hall, Contemporary Art Institute, Théâtre National Populaire...) as well as everything that Lyon has to offer... It is very well connected, with stops on metro lines A and B, tram lines T1 and T4 as well as numerous bus lines. The main higher education institutions can be accessed quickly: University Lyon 2 and 3, Doua campus and even ENS.
